I am a native of Germany and have lived and worked in the United States since 1993. I am a Professor of Geography—and current Chair of—the Department of the Environment, Geography & Marine Sciences at Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) and serve as one of the Co-Directors of the CSU System Center for Environmental Literacy and Sustainability Education. In addition, I am an affiliate of the Economic and Social Rights Research Group at the University of Connecticut’s Human Rights Research Institute and one of the co-editors of the Journal Environment, Space, Place.

Since 2017, I also hold a post as Visiting Lecturer in the School of Natural Sciences and Psychology at Liverpool John Moores University in the UK.

I am a broadly trained geographer with  research interests in environmental economic geography, sustainable development, the geography of human rights (specifically economic rights), and the history and philosophy of geographic thought. For specific projects please visit my research page. I have international teaching and/or research experience in Africa, Central America, and Europe. My work has been published in leading journals such as the Annals of Regional ScienceApplied GeographyGeoforumPolitical Science Quarterly, GeoHumanities and Urban Geography.  I also collaborate with my colleague and friend Jeff Slomba on a Geospatial Sculpture project which aims to open up a conversation between geography and the arts.
