I am a native of Germany and have lived and worked in the United States since 1993. I am a Professor of Geography in the Department of the Environment, Geography & Marine Sciences at Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) and serve as the lead of Project Blue @ SCSU - a transdisciplinary research, innovation, and workforce development project focused on the Long Island Sound Blue Economy. In addition, I am an affiliate of the Economic and Social Rights Research Group at the University of Connecticut’s Human Rights Research Institute and hold a post as Visiting Lecturer at the University Centre of the Westfjords in Iceland.

From 2017 to 2020, I was a visiting Visiting Lecturer, at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) as part of an institution-wide collaboration effort between SCSU & LJMU. In the 2021/2022 Winter Semester, I was employed as a Guest Professor in the Department of Geography at the University of Cologne. This position was funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

                      

I am a broadly trained geographer with research interests in environmental economic geography, sustainable development, the geography of human rights (specifically economic rights), and the history and philosophy of geographic thought. For specific projects please visit my research page. I have international teaching and/or research experience in Africa, Central America, and Europe. My work has been published in leading journals such as the Annals of Regional ScienceApplied GeographyGeoforumthe Geographical Journal, Political Science Quarterly, GeoHumanities, and Urban Geography.  I also collaborate with my colleague and friend Jeff Slomba on a Geospatial Sculpture project which aims to open up a conversation between geography and the arts.
